Ozy,
You can try the version of SCID from the 5th of August if you haven't yet. Lots of improvements, better aesthetics, still a bit clunky, but overall very good software.

I'm still waiting for version 5, which will be an epic upgrade. Maybe you saw at TalkChess that Fulvio confirmed it's in the works. I'm still running version 4.7 and don't see a reason to keep dealing with the 16.7 million games limitation, not when it's going to be lifted soon enough.

No install, just unzip and have a look. Very similar to the August version.

I tried it, but it's not clear whether this is 4.8 or 5 beta. I still haven't updated my DB, which would put it past the old limit, and the board looks small in a high resolution display, so I'm not going to do that just yet. The preference menu looks wrong too, probably because I changed the size of text in windows display settings.

Oops, it was released a week ago, time to update the DB and try the new format.

The difference between the beta and the final release is small. At least, I did not see it. I don't know how to convert si4 to si5. I guess I have to search thoroughly through the menus. Worth checking if Caissa base has embraced the new format.

With the DB open, go to the menu as follows: And these are the files you had and the new ones:

Thanks, Ozy. Meanwhile -- the last Caissa base is from last December, so still the old format. I also think that the author uses ScidvsPC.

I don't know if there's even a speed difference with small databases. I will need to wait until I have the big one ready, to test the new format against the old.

A quick comparison between Scid 5 and Scid vs PC 4.24Visually, the clear winner is Scid 5:
- The board is centered and you can choose scalable Merida pieces (the nice ones, there are several).
- The players names are stylishly contained in equally shaped white rectangles.
- Navigation buttons are even more elegantly integrated.
- Engine output is another win; with basically the same functionality, the information is presented in a more pleasing way.
- The "tree-best games" combo would be a tie. But only aesthetically. The inclusion of the statistics in the tree view, instead of the less useful ECO column, is a win for Scid vs PC. In general, I find the information cluttered in Scid's tree, too many columns.
- An finally, a clear win for Scid vs PC in the eye appeal category would come from the PGN window, thanks to figurine notation and the possibility to enlarge font size a little more freely (the elements the notation's font is tied to, aren't so easily affected).
From a purely functional standpoint, Scid 5 has the speed and the new DB format, which trumps Scid vs PC's two book mode (what the hell is "opponent book" good for?). A word on launching the program. Neither of the two recalls the exact size of the windows, or the option for the extra engine information. In addition to this, Scid doesn't auto-load the database. Despite this last bit, for the moment, Scid is the overall winner but Scid vs PC hasn't been updated in almost a year, so the ball is in their court.
