IMO, it's not worthy if it takes the years he mentions in the interview, you'll tell me ;-) Yes, not enough time to watch all the movies we'd like AND read everything we'd like. You have to make a choice. Mine? I went for movies, started two years ago in the 30's (no mute films, thank you very much) and I'm already up to 94' with the Kieślowski trilogy. Also yes, most sadly, the few people I know are also dying, most recently Юрий Гудзоватый, some hours before the winter solstice. Not sure when, a basque guy I met at Benasque. I discovered he had died after investigating why he was silent for so long. My physical therapist, with whom I exchanged emails has also disappeared, her account doesn't exist anymore. Except for the Russian guy, the rest took care of themselves.

Anyway, if I stop posting here, you'll know what happened. Also check my profile on the site of my faculty (Faculty of Philosophy in Kosovska Mitrovica). But I hope we shall be here for some times, a decade at least, and perhaps, that we'll meet one day.

I'd like that, the opportunity to meet Yuri already came and went. He invited me to Moscow, but with my knee being what it is, I returned the invite; but it wasn't a realistic invite, given the problems Russian nationals encounter in the EU nowadays. He said as much and it didn't come to pass.

I finally played some chess at the town's "chess club" (the local pastry shop/coffeehouse). I was passing by, saw an old friend, and was involved in some blitz. Since there are no "educated"/"formal" chess players any more at my town, they play at 10'. My opponent played only with black, and I had to remind him to stop the clock with the same hand he makes the moves, and, more seriously, not to take back moves. Twenty five years ago it was a problem, and I see it still is.
I played two good games, and won easily against an opponent probably ranked between 1500 and at most 1600. No blunders, steady games, easy conversion of a positional advantage first, then a direct attack on the king in the Sicilian, against a weak player.
Then, instead of leaving, I agreed to play a third game and the mess started. In a Dutch (I played 1.d4 for a change), despite playing worse than in the first two games, I won a Knight and had a completely winning position when my old teacher of physics arrived and expressed his condolences for my mother (who is still alive). Then he continued explaining that he had taken me for somebody else while I waited to make my next move. I tried to explain to him that I was playing, but, alas, nothing to do, and when I was finally able to continue the game, I blundered my queen in the next move.
But that was all OK. I was a bit tired, did not play for a long time, my old teacher is senile, things happen. But what made me jump were the comments. My opponent explained to me that f5 is "a mighty weapon" and expressed his satisfaction for the "attack" he had led. His neighbor also made a stupid comment, etc.
I founded our chess club 27 years ago, in 1996. While I was involved -- before working at the university -- we steadily improved, organized team competitions (we had our own yearly rapid tournament, and organized two regional championships). Aleksandar Matanovic, Zoran Novoselski, Drasko Velimirovic were our regular guests. A chess culture was developed. Our meager funds were used for chess.
Unfortunately, I had to stop playing, and the people who started the club with me died. Now, everything is back at the very beginning.

So sad and frustrating, all that work amount to nothing. There are different aspects to that experience I can relate to: - The informal/coffee scenario. While I don't frequent those establishments, I've more than once agreed to play games with players outside the FIDE scope. What you could otherwise term as a coffee player. Invariably, I'd find myself in a similar situation as the one you describe. You impose the rules (stop the clock and move with one hand, not backsies...) at the same time you're playing, effectively fulfilling two roles.
- Someone butting in. Although you might think this should be restricted to friendly games, it's not. I once was interrupted in a FIDE tournament by someone from my club, who literally inserted himself in the game by sticking his head between mine and the board. A Romanian guy.
- After imposing your play, the coffee player will always want more. I remember playing with Denis, my then brother in law, and after beating him badly 3-0, he still insisted in playing a couple more. He saved face with the final 3-2.
- The final point happens all the time. Against rated players too. It's quite often that I loose a game due to tactics, and then my opponent will go on to explain how he was already better. 80% of the time, the engines say otherwise. I seldom make a positional comment after a game, it's a sure way to further mess it up.

I played today too, much better though. I am satisfied. Won all my games with relatively correct play even in blitz. I blundered one pawn in a blitz game, but I managed to sac the queen and win this ending. I was an easy sac though, nothing special.
I'll spare you of the hilarious comments when I stopped to drink my tea (and leave). I guess you heard them all. I tried to explain to my weaker opponent how the kind of position we had should be played, but to avail. He knows better, because he trains against Fritz.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, I remember I played a rapid game against Branko Damljanovic once. He destroyed me easily, but he was so polite, so respectful, he even explained to me the ideas behind the novelties in the opening I had played (a Pirc). He was already a GM then. So... life is full of surprises.

Time to resurrect this thread. Using Peshka now, like you do. Managed an Elo of 2264 so far, but I haven't tried my nemesis yet: endgame exercises, when my Elo goes down.

Trying to remember what we wrote about. Lichess? Did you play OTB recently?

ChessTempo. I'm back at it after finishing my last round of artificial antibodies treatment. The cloud in my head has been lifted; after a month regaining my level (2000) I've been able to maintain it for another month now. Previously, I could get there with a huge effort (spending awful lots of time) but lost the mark quickly as soon as I started "solving" the problems at a more realistic pace. This last bit is important, otherwise you run out of time on clocked games. The last one I played, last month, was a clear example: at 30'+30", I played horribly the endings, losing one of them in a won position.

I played some games on Lichess, but I stopped, because my heartbeat becomes too fast. I started by playing blitz, but it was too tense for me (although I lost only my first game). So I switched to 30'+ 30", and lost my last two games, blundering twice a lot. I played tired -- in the first game, I forgot to play h3 although I calculated it in a sharp position; in the second, it was even worse: I blundered a full rook in a won position. I am not bad at solving problems though.

I blundered a full rook in a won position I did it with check, on the aforementioned game, although the position was already a draw by then, the winning move was a while before, and I saw it, but didn't have the time to properly asses the ensuing position.

It is so important to start the game with a clean head, especially at our age, when we tire much faster.
Otoh, it was clear that the problem solving training gave good results, since I won several game with nice combinations. I had difficulties to calculate (question of discipline and visioning) but I "saw" the threats and the ideas.

Funny how the brain works, after wasting over half an hour and failing a 1800 problem, I solve a 2200 in like 5 min.

There was a simple problem yesterday I could not solve. I switch on Peshka today, and the solution was clear at first sight. I have to quit smoking presto.

Ok. Now, after all these exercises: I see faster, I see better, but I am still unable to calmly calculate variations, to check the order of moves, etc. I suck.
