What is your experience with cheating in OTB play? Last time I played (in 2007 or 08), mobile phones were very scarce, and I did not face anything suspicious. If I did, I certainly did not think about it. We used to go to the buffet to smoke and have a drink, and I had often very friendly talks with my opponents.
What's your take about this Carlsen retirement?

Cheating has always existed. Even before computers and smartphones. You just needed a strong chess player friend on site and you were set.
My earliest recollection of this, comes from a game I played in 2010, where my Armenian opponent vividly discussed the position with some friends. The arbiter couldn't do anything, because we didn't understand what they were saying. Their intent was clear though: one would approach the board, and after careful examination, would join his friends for further kibitzing. If nothing else, this behavior made it so I was more busy looking elsewhere, rather than paying attention at the pieces on the board.
If you're talking about silicon friends (which is a democratization of the old cheating behavior), I can only recall a situation where my rival left the playing grounds (while on his turn) during the opening. He clearly didn't know anything about the Damiano Gambit and left at a critical point in the game. The arbiter looked for him and reminded him of the rules, nothing more. He won that one, the previous from a year earlier was a draw, at least.
This, as far personal experiences involving my own games go. In club matches, I once had to remind some players of the opposing team that they couldn't discuss current positions (which they were doing). They dispersed, and a while later, I was asking someone from my own team about how long he had been playing the Colle system, because it was a favorite of mine and really offbeat (I hadn't met anyone else playing it). The other team's captain happened to cross past us and sneered my own comment back at me, without even stopping to hear what we were actually saying.
So cheating isn't anything new. Engines have just changed the quality of the advice and raised the alarms about it.
Carlsen behaved like a spoiled child. But at least he showed good manners.

When I played a bit more in the nineties, I guess I was too stupid and blind to notice anything that would be cheating. Usually we played one match a week, at our place or in the club of our opponents, there were just a few players present, and it was always very quiet. We usually had a few drinks with our opponents after the match, sometimes they would prepare something to eat, the atmosphere was often very friendly. I remember just one tense situation, but the position on the board was very tense and my opponent, in a winning position, blundered and was mated. He was very dejected and angry afterward. Otherwise, most of the time it was a real pleasure to play and meet chess friends.
But I guess it was in another century.

Well, yes. The two examples I noted are from 2010 and 2011. Most recently I haven't noticed anything, but that's also probably because I already have other problems to focus on.
